Urushi lacquer is a very special natural material made from the sap special trees, which only grow in East Asian countries. This Urushi is in very limited supply. The deciduous Urushi tree takes 15 years to reach maturity and each mature tree can only supply 200 grams of sap. The Urushi sap (which is poisonous) is then mixed with other compounds to form the lacquer. When hand applied to the surface of the pen and kept in high humidity it slowly sets (hardens) into a hard durable and lustrous finish, which is waterproof and resistant to most other materials. This special lacquered surface protects the pen in the best possible manner. The Urushi is applied in up to 12 separate coatings, all of which have to fully harden and dry before the next application. The total process can take up to two months to prepare. The plain Urushi lacquers have been traditionally used to decorate materials in Japan since the Jomon period. This fine writing instrument features a 21K gold nib with a cartridge/converter filling system.
